FIRST STEP – Select cards

Each Magic Square has 16 cards divided into four groups of four cards, each of which is of a different suit:

BASTOS, COPAS, ESPADAS and OROS

These groups of four cards of different suits, are formed by the following numerical sequences:

( 1, 2, 3, 4 ), ( 5, 6, 7, 8 ), ( 9, 10, 11, 12 )

As the 4×4 Square has 16 numbers and the suits in the deck only have 12 cards each, we MUST repeat four cards with the same number sequence:

In the first Magic Square on the left, this number sequence is repeated twice:

 ( 1, 2, 3, 4 )

In the second Magic Square in the centre, this number sequence is repeated twice:

 ( 5, 6, 7, 8 )

In the third Magic Square on the right, this number sequence is repeated twice:

 ( 9, 10, 11, 12 )

FIRST STEP – Select cards

The best way to select the cards is by putting the four suits in order from 1 to 12, and dividing them into three groups of four cards which are placed in four columns, top to bottom, in the centre square like this:

We will select 12 cards in three groups of four different suits, with the number sequence:

and place them in the square on the left.

(we do this by starting at the top left and working our way down to the right)

In the square on the left we have 12 cards from 1 to 12 in three groups of three different suits with the number sequence:

and we MUST add a group of four cards of the missing suit in this square.

Select from the centre square the group of four cards in the top right-hand corner and add it to the square on the left.

This group is of the missing suit from the square and has the numerical sequence ( 1, 2, 3, 4 ) that is repeated twice.

Select the group of four cards in the bottom left corner and add it to the square on the right. This group is of the missing suit from the square and has the numerical sequence of

The four groups of four cards left in the middle square, we leave them where they are, because they are the selection of cards for this square:

and another numerical sequence that is repeated twice

( 5, 6, 7, 8 )

(the four sequences are of different suits)

1 to 4 ESPADAS, 5 to 8 BASTOS, 9 to 12 COPAS and 5 to 8 OROS remains in the centre square

And so, we have completed the first step “Select Cards
