THIRD STEP – Place cards

Before placing face down the cards that we have selected and mixed up, we will first visualize the existence in each Square of eight 2×3 rectangles that have one of their corners coinciding with one of the corners of the 4×4 Square.

These eight 2×3 rectangles are divided into two groups of four rectangles:

  • A group of 4 Horizontal rectangles
  • A group of 4 Vertical rectangles

The group of four horizontal rectangles has:

2 horizontal rectangles in the upper half of the square

2 horizontal rectangles in the bottom half of the square.

Two rectangles in the upper half of the square
  • two rectangles in the upper half of the square (one on the left and the other on the right) and have one of their corners, marked with an X coinciding with one of the corners of the 4×4 square.
Two rectangles in the bottom half of the square
  • two rectangles in the lower half of the square (one on the left and the other on the right) and have one of their corners, marked with an X coinciding with one of the corners of the 4×4 square.

The second group of four vertical rectangles has:

2 vertical rectangles in the left half of the square.

2 vertical rectangles in the right half of the square.

Two rectangles in the left hand of the square
  • two rectangles in the left half of the square (one above and one below) and have one of their corners, marked with an X coinciding with one of the corners of the 4×4 square.
Two rectangles in the right half of the square
  • two rectangles in the right half of the square (one at the top and the other at the bottom) and have one of their corners, marked with an X coinciding with one of the corners of the 4×4 square.

In each square, the cards are placed face down four by four, in the four corners of the group of rectangles that we have decided to use (horizontal rectangles or vertical rectangles)

Horizontal and Vertical 2×3 RECTANGLES

The order in which the cards are placed in the corners of the rectangle can be in four different ways:

Clockwise

Clockwise.

Anticlockwise

– Anticlockwise.

X shaped

Crossing the rectangle TWICE when the cards are placed diagonally (  X  shaped  ).

Z shaped

Crossing the rectangle ONCE when the cards are placed diagonally (  Z  shaped  ).

Any order we choose to use can start at any of the corners of the rectangle.

Place cards

THIRD STEP – Place cards

For example:

If we choose to place the cards in a clockwise direction, we can do it in four different ways depending on which corner of the rectangle we place the first card:

First card on top left corner of the rectangle

In this rectangle, the first card of the four that are placed clockwise is in the upper left corner.

First card on top right corner of the rectangle

In this rectangle, the first card of the four that are placed clockwise is in the upper right hand corner.

First card on botton right corner of the rectangle

In this rectangle, the first card of the four that are placed clockwise is in the lower right corner.

First card on bottom left corner of the rectangle

In this rectangle the first card of the four that are placed clockwise is in the lower left corner

When we place the cards face down, we have no reference to visualize the rectangles except TWO things:

1  it is easy to visualize the two halves of the 4×4 square (either we split the square in two, horizontally or vertically)

2  one of the corners of the 2×3 rectangles coincides with one of the corners of the 4×4 square

(We can rely on this when trying to visualize the 2×3 rectangles to place the cards).

4 groups of animals placed in rectangles corners

To better visualise the four corners of the four 2×3 rectangles, I have used black and white animals in these squares:

– 1 Lizard (black)

– 2 Dolphin (white)

– 3 Dog (white)

– 4 Cat (black)

In this list the Lizard is first, followed by the Dolphin, then the Dog and lastly the Cat, but we can change the order of this list and start up the other way round (or any other order).

When we place the cards, we also choose which rectangle we will use first, and in which order we will use the others.

Regarding the 2×3 rectangles and the order in which we place the cards, we must choose FOUR things and be truly clear about our choice as any choice we make will be used in ALL the square:

1  choose what kind of rectangles we are going to use (vertical rectangle or horizontal rectangle)

2  choose the first corner of the rectangle where the first card will be placed, (top left or right corner, bottom left or right corner)

3  choose the order in which the cards will be placed at the corners of the rectangle (clockwise, counter-clockwise, X-shaped, Z-shaped)

4  choose the rectangle to be used first and the order of the rectangles to be followed, (rectangle top left or right, rectangle bottom left or right)

Always following the same order that we have decided to use for ALL the Square

After placing four cards in the corners of the four rectangles, the Square will be complete with 16 cards face down.
